Find Things To Do In Caerphilly
Welcome to Caerphilly
Caerphilly, Welsh Caerffili, castle town and urban area (built-up area as of 2011), Caerphilly county borough, mediaeval county of Glamorgan (Morgannwg), southern Wales It’s about 7 miles (11 km) north-northwest of central Cardiff, in the northern portion of the Cardiff metropolitan region.
Outside of a 13th-century castle, the town built grown. The Welsh prince Llywelyn ap Gruffudd demolished the still-unfinished building in 1270, but it was reconstructed from 1271 onwards, with some 14th-century modifications. The castle, which was built on a circular layout with a surrounding moat, is the largest in Britain after Windsor, covering 30 acres (12 hectares). The castle was abandoned by 1536, save for one section that was used as a jail, and it was further devastated by Parliamentary troops during the English Civil Wars (around the 1640s); one tower still leans at an angle following an unsuccessful effort to blow it up. The castle was given to the crown by the marquess of Bute in 1949.
