It’s easy to see why Seacoast Safaris takes thousands of passengers to explore this magnificent island each year, with its breathtaking landscape and diverse species. On one of their 35 or 54 passenger cruise boats, their Puffin Island tours offer a peaceful and relaxing experience. Along the journey, they’ll point out points of interest and educate you about the area history, as well as observing different birds and wildlife and informing you about them.
Puffin Island, also known as Ynys Seiriol in Welsh, is the ninth biggest island off the Welsh coast and is located near the northeast entrance to the Menai Straits. Puffin Island is currently a bird refuge and a breeding ground for a variety of seabird species. The primary season is between April and July, when you may expect to see common guillemots, razorbills, kittiwakes, and, of course, puffins, although, like other seabirds, they can only be seen at sea outside of the nesting season. They’d also discovered fulmar and eider ducks nesting on the island, as well as the occasional black guillemot. Other species such as cormorants and shags, as well as the island’s permanent Atlantic grey seals, are there all year. You could even see a porpoise or even a dolphin if you’re lucky.
Please note that they will only sail if the weather is safe; nonetheless, this is a sea tour, and the sea state around the island can be harsher than within the Menai Strait. Please keep this in mind if you are a fearful sailor and contemplate booking a Menai Strait Cruise.
Cruises take about 80 minutes, however, trip lengths may vary somewhat depending on tide conditions, and are suited for people of all ages; you can even bring your dog along, but please read their access statement if you have any special needs.
