The Cathedral has profound spiritual origins and has served as a holy place for over 1500 years. Following a vision and summons from God, St Woolos (Gwynllyw) established a centre of devotion here in the fifth century.
Christ has been present and proclaimed here in speech, sacrament, and loving service, blazing a light of hope for everyone. Here has been found refuge from life’s trials and tribulations, so that Christ may invite “all who are tired and bearing heavy loads” (Matthew 11:28) to lay them before his throne of grace. Key events in life have been commemorated here, with pleasure and gladness rejoicing in the Lord.
Today, Newport Cathedral is a dynamic place of prayer and worship, welcoming everyone with open arms and extending out in loyal and loving service. The arts play an important role in our lives, and we organise many concerts, exhibits, and events. Our worship is centred on music.
It is the smallest of the Welsh Cathedrals, yet it provides intimacy and flexibility. We look forward to seeing you in person whenever you are able to visit us.
