Llechwedd’s Slate Mountain Adventure offers a very unique tour of the historically significant quarry. Beginning with a thrilling ex-military vehicle ride to the property’s highest peaks, you’ll view the massive quarries of Maenofferen, Diffwys Casson, and others, and discover how they’re an essential component of the bid to designate the North West Wales Slate Landscape a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bring your cameras to capture the breathtaking views of South Snowdonia, including Snowdon, Moel Siabod, Blaenau Ffestiniog’s own Moelwyn mountain range, and the Irish Sea beyond.
After a short stop at the main tourist centre, your guide will take you 500 feet down into the Llechwedd Deep Mine on Europe’s steepest cable train. During your journey down these enormous tunnels, all hand carved over time, you’ll hear some of the miners’ unique stories, as well as personal experiences from your guide, culminating in an award-winning, evocative light and sound display at their underground lake.
