Conwy Castle’s battlements can be walked completely around thanks to rebuilt spiral stairs in its massive turrets. It comes highly recommended by us. This is one of Europe’s most beautiful mediaeval castles.
The rugged mountains of Snowdonia loom in the background, and below you are the port and small alleys of Conwy, which are still defended by an unbroken 1,400-yard (1.3km) ring of town walls.
It’s enough to make you gasp. Especially when you consider that King Edward I and his architect Master James of St George constructed both the castle and the fortifications in only four years, from 1283 to 1287.
Conwy joins Edward’s other major castles, Beaumaris, Harlech, and Caernarfon, as a World Heritage Site.
This well-known castle has been extremely well maintained. It is home to the most complete collection of mediaeval royal apartments in Wales. The towering curtain wall and eight soaring towers stand nearly as tall as they were when they were constructed almost 700 years ago.
So, if you can, don’t be scared to climb those stairwells to get the whole Conwy experience. There is no better location in the UK to stand on the battlements and fantasise.
