The stone keep and curtain wall were added in the late 12th century after the castle began as an earthwork fortress around AD 1100. After Owain Glyndr lay siege to the fortress during his revolt against English authority in the 14th century, and again in the 15th, major reconstruction took place. In the early 16th century, other changes were undertaken, including the construction of a third storey.
Though the castle is now a ruin, remnants from each era provide insight into its long and illustrious history.
