In October 2005, the Geopark was admitted into the European Geopark Network, and in October 2006, it was welcomed into the UNESCO-assisted Global Geoparks Network. It is a signatory to the European Geoparks Charter, which governs its operations. It was one of the 120 founding members of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network in November 2015, putting it on par with World Heritage Sites like Blaenavon near the National Park’s eastern edge.
