This magnificent 13th-century castle overlooks the breathtaking Teifi Gorge and has inspired numerous painters, including Turner.

Cilgerran Castle is one of Wales’ most beautifully situated castles. Its two massive circular towers rise over the steep canyon of the River Teifi and the fast-flowing Plysog.

You may have assumed it was the ideal location from which the invading Anglo-Normans could defend their freshly acquired territories. Take the exciting wall-walk from the east tower to appreciate what a formidable challenge it must have posed to the kings of the old kingdom of Deheubarth.

However, it was not completely impenetrable. Cilgerran was most likely constructed as a ringwork fortress in 1108 by the Norman adventurer Gerald of Windsor, and it changed hands many times over the following century or so.
